The introductory chapter to this book on AI attitudes explains why the study of AI attitudes is of high international relevance. In this context, the prominent Technology Acceptance Model and the Theory of Planned Behavior will be shortly revisited in the context of AI underlining that research on attitudes towards AI represents a cornerstone variable to understand if people will ultimately master the coming AI wave in societies around the globe. Beyond this, the introductory chapter reflects on the recently proposed IMPACT framework. IMPACT stands for Interplay of Modality, Person, Area, Country/Culture and Transparency categories helping laypersons and scientists alike to better understand what factors influence AI attitudes, its impact on wellbeing and also if AI might be a benevolent or a dangerous technology within certain context, governance protocol and modality of operation. Further, the IMPACT framework serves as structure of the present book, whereas the individual contributions of the book are shortly previewed.
