Cultural and Technological Transformations

This final chapter integrates the central themes of this book, bringing together insights from sociology, cultural studies, and other disciplines. While the contemporary body is often viewed as a flexible project for individuals to shape, it remains largely influenced by external forces within the political economy. Examples are given of this in medicine, culture, fashion, sports, fitness and entertainment, and biotechnological and genetic industries, and their implications for the construction of disordered eating are considered. The illusion of dietary freedom is discussed, emphasizing the costs for those living and working in the countries where these goods are produced. Disparities in food quality between high- and low-income neighborhoods create a paradox where malnutrition and obesity coexist, even within the same communities. The chapter goes on to explain how the reach of diagnostic culture can give the impression that psychiatry has been democratized, but in practice it remains a largely uncontested system of power. With state sponsorship, psychiatry has gained cultural legitimacy, institutional authority, and political influence, providing governments with ethical justification and practical tools to manage their most challenging citizens. While involuntary treatments, such as tube feeding, may be deemed necessary to save lives, these measures can result in a loss of autonomy, erosion of trust, and subsequent stigma and social isolation. The chapter then shifts its focus to the ongoing crisis in mental health services, pointing out how ethnic and intersectional disparities, intergenerational racial trauma, and microaggressions have undermined trust in psychiatry. Finally, advancements in biomedicine, genetic engineering, and other advanced technologies are considered. These and other technological innovations are prompting us to question the nature of our own bodies and minds in ways previously only imagined in fiction.
