Computerized Cognitive Training Technology for Improving Cognitive Performance and Preventing Cognitive Impairment: Analysis of the Efficacy

Computerized cognitive training (CCT) as a non-invasive method for stimulating functional brain activity and neuroplasticity processes, is a rapidly developing scientific field at the intersection of information technologies and healthcare. The results of this intervention can be successfully translated into practical application in clinical area and personalized medicine. The basis of CCT is software for stimulating cognitive processes in order to improve their performance. The level of interest in CCT has been growing faster than other areas of rehabilitation aimed at healthy aging. This is likely due to the increasing evidence of effectiveness, the relative complexity of assessment and data transfer mechanisms, and the availability of such systems on a variety of platforms. This paper reports on the state-of-the-art of research on CCT aimed at preventing cognitive impairment. Our scientific purpose is to highlight the current scientific evidence in this area and support the integration of IT research into clinical practice, in particular to explore the potential of CCT as a promising therapeutic tool in the paradigm of successful aging and prevention of cognitive impairment progression. The analysis suggests that this intervention improves global cognitive function in patients with early Alzheimer’s disease, mild cognitive impairment and during normal aging, but new studies with comparable protocols are needed to quantify the effectiveness of CCT in preventing long-term cognitive decline. #CSOC1120.
