Medical Waste Management: From a Literature Review to a Conceptual and Multidimensional Framework

MedicalMedical Waste ManagementManagement (MWM) is one of the most critical processes in the HospitalHospital Supply ChainSupply chain (HSC). This criticality was revealed during the Covid-19 crisis, as Medical WasteWaste (MW) can be a factor favoring infection if they are poorly managed. In developing countries, this logistical activity is generally managed in a hazardous manner, posing a real danger to patients, healthcare staff, the population and, above all, the environment. The aim of this paper is to present an analysis of existing literature on MWM, before proposing a conceptual and multidimensional FrameworkFramework for managing this type of waste. To do this, we will first delineate the MWM process in HSC, then carry out a literature review to identify research gaps, particularly in relation to the dimensions targeted by the study namely sustainability, digitalization, risk managementManagement, integration, performance, and resilience, which will enable us to develop a Conceptual and Multidimensional Framework for MWM. Which FrameworkFramework provides considerable background in this area and will therefore serve as a roadmap for subsequent research work, but also a practical guide for practitioners and managers wishing to implement integrated, safe, efficient and responsible management methods for their MW.
