Methods of Connecting Public Lighting to the Internet

In today's era, the replacement of outdated public lighting systems remains a significant topic in many towns and cities across Central Europe. There are several approaches to tackling this replacement. Some municipalities prioritize lower cost, while others place a higher emphasis on quality. If a municipality decides to modernize its public lighting system with IoT elements, the debate arises on how to execute such a transformation. There are various methods available for connecting public lighting fixtures to the internet. This paper focuses on communication technologies such as LTE-M, RF (LoRa), and PLC, which are utilized in the municipality of Ivanka pri Dunaji. Each of these technologies has its advantages and disadvantages. The determination of the most suitable communication type for their specific needs is at the discretion of the relevant local government and its experts.
