Problem Identification and CLBDM

Problem identification and clarity is the first step of Creative Loop–Based Decision Making (CLBDM), a framework that combines systems thinking and creative decision making to solve complex problems. In this chapter, we explore how CLBDM can provide a holistic and systemic perspective of the problem situation, revealing its underlying causes, effects, feedback loops, and leverage points. We use Causal Loop Diagrams (CLDs), a tool of systems thinking, to create feedback loops that can reveal the dynamics and complexity of systems problems, as well as the potential creative solutions that can address them effectively. We use some examples from the field of climate change and human health to illustrate how systems thinking can improve our problem identification and clarity skills. We hope that this chapter will inspire you to use systems thinking as a powerful tool for problem identification and clarity in your creative decision-making process.
