Carbon Footprints in Agriculture: Challenges, Mitigation Strategies, and Future Prospects

Agriculture, being pivotal in global food production, has also an environmental impact, particularly in terms of carbon footprints, which in turn has become a subject of growing concern. This abstract spotlights a comprehensive overview of the current state of research on carbon footprints in agriculture, focusing on the assessment of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, exploration of mitigation strategies, and the promotion of sustainable practices. The assessment of agricultural carbon involves quantifying emissions associated with cultivation practices, land use, livestock management, fertilizer application, and energy consumption, which in turn aims to identify key contributors and establish a legacy for effective mitigation strategies. Mitigation strategies encompass technological advancements, as well as policy interventions that incentivize sustainable practices. Thus, sustainable agricultural practices emerge as essential components in the quest to minimize carbon footprints. These practices include agroforestry, organic farming, and the adoption of regenerative agriculture techniques. This chapter examines the potential of these approaches to sequester carbon, enhance soil health, and promote biodiversity, contributing to a more sustainable and resilient agricultural system. Furthermore, it discusses the role of stakeholders, including farmers, policymakers, and consumers, in driving the transition towards a low-carbon agriculture sector and education in driving the transition towards more sustainable agricultural practices. Thus, by emissions assessment, implementing effective mitigation strategies, and promoting sustainable practices, the agricultural sector can contribute significantly to global efforts to mitigate climate change while ensuring food security for future generations. Finally, it advocates for a holistic approach, integrating environmental, economic, and social aspects, to effectively address the challenge of reducing carbon footprints in agriculture.
