BEQuizzer: AI-Based Quiz Automatic Generation in the Portuguese Language

The development of technological solutions to support teachers and learners in online settings is a challenging task. In a vision of active learning, new methods and technologies must support the generation of daily activities that promote richer interactions and encourage student participation. Quizzes are question-and-answer activities that are prone to contributing to the learning process. This study addresses the challenge of automatically generating multiple-choice quizzes from free natural language texts in Portuguese. We propose a generative AI-based framework to this end. Our solution considers refining language models in an encoder-decoder model architecture to generate questions and question-answering tasks. Our experiments evaluate how distinct prompt designs relying on LLMs suit these tasks. Our contribution paves the way for the construction of digital learning environments that can lead to improvements in student training and engagement, as well as to favor teacher-generated activities.
