Climate Change and Human Security in the MENA Region
摘要
Arafat offers a unique analysis of climate change and human security in the MENA region. This chapter analyses the definition of climate security, the major threats of climate change to MENA human security, the links between climate change and food and water security, the impact of climate change on forced displacement and migration, as well as violent conflicts in the MENA region. Arafat examines the cost of climate change in the MENA region. “Climate Change and Human Security in the MENA Region” concludes that Iraq and Syria are the most affected countries by climate trends in the Middle East. Droughts and low precipitation, particularly in northern Morocco, Algeria, Libya, Egypt, and Tunisia, are causing water stress for 50–350 million people, with Egypt's water supplies per capita declining by 60% since 1970.
