Poverty and Inequality in the MENA Region

Arafat offers an in-depth analysis of poverty, multidimensional poverty, and inequality in the MENA region. Focusing on poverty and inequality in the MENA region, this chapter draws attention to the state of poverty and inequality in the MENA region; youth poverty in the MENA region; inequality and corruption in the MENA region; the link between inequality and regional conflicts; and the MENA poverty reduction programmes. This chapter argues that poverty drives youth to join extremist groups. “Poverty and Inequality in the MENA Region” concludes that rising inequality fuels conflict and political insecurity in the region, as evidenced by the 2011 Arab uprisings. It also concludes that rapid and sustained growth is the most effective way to reduce poverty. Maintaining annual growth rates of 3% per capita may reduce MENA poverty to 7%, 13% lower than current levels.
