Food Security in the MENA Region
摘要
Arafat offers an in-depth analysis of food security in the MENA region. Focusing on food security in the MENA region, this chapter draws attention to the conceptualization of food security, MENA drivers of food insecurity, the state of food security in the MENA region, weaponization and securitization of food security in the MENA region, and the MENA region’s response to food insecurity. “Food Security in the MENA Region” concludes that a seven-pillar strategy—increasing domestic food production, advancing technology, supporting small and medium-sized farms, strengthening domestic agriculture, overseas investment, eliminating poverty and economic inequality, strengthening supply chains, and enhancing regional and international cooperation—could ensure food security. It also concludes that the MENA region cannot provide food security now or in the future due to increased water scarcity, agricultural challenges, and rapid population growth.
