A New Understanding of the Cross and Crucifix

In 1537, the Lutheran Reformation was implemented in Norway. According to authoritative Lutheran teachings, people were no longer to rely on material images for divine experiences. The material world could be seductive and misleading, and if falsely venerated it would lead people away from God. What was the Lutheran attitude towards miraculous images, and did the confessional changes involve an altered understanding of images of crosses and crucifixes? This chapter highlights some of the voices in the Reformation debate on images, and the receptions of the new teaching in post-Reformation Norway.
