Late Medieval Theological Attitudes Towards Images of Crosses and Crucifixes

  • Kaja Merete Haug Hagen

摘要

When late medieval people engaged with the miraculous objects, the question is whether the divine was recognized as an active force behind or beyond the images, or whether the sculptures themselves were believed to make miracles happen. This chapter will focus on late medieval theological attitudes towards images of crosses and crucifixes in general and images that were credited with wonderworking powers. How were such images explained and treated by theological authorities? Were these explanations understood and accepted by the common people of the later Middle Ages?
