Miraculous Crosses and Crucifixes in Early Modern Norway

  • Kaja Merete Haug Hagen

摘要

In Early Modern Norway, understandings and functions of the cross and crucifix were multifaceted. Despite Lutheran normative instructions to abolish image cults, the actual responses towards miraculous images were disparate. In the final chapter, we will examine the post-Reformation treatments of the cross from Borre and the crucifixes from Røldal and Fana which reveal a persistent belief in material sanctity for decades, and in some cases centuries, following the official implementation of the Lutheran faith.
