Evaluating a Newborn

Most babies are born in labor and delivery units, at birthing centers, or at home. Few babies are born in the emergency department, and few newly born babies are brought to the emergency department. However, it is important for an emergency physician to be prepared to be able to perform a rapid and thorough assessment to determine whether a newly born child will require any immediate medical intervention.
