Mastitis

Mastitis is a common condition described in breastfeeding women. It is a localized infection and inflammation of the breast tissue typically associated with clogged milk ducts, breast engorgement, and small breaks in the skin. Presentation to the emergency department is typically during the first few weeks or months after fetal delivery due to pain, erythema, induration, and edema of the breast, though some patients may have sepsis. The milk serves as a growth medium for several skin and oral bacteria. Many cases will improve with improved circulation and drainage of the milk ducts; however, it is common for these patients to complete a course of oral antibiotics prescribed from the emergency department. A diagnosis of mastitis inherently should not disrupt breastfeeding.
