The introductory chapter argues for a deeper theoretical understanding of communication’s relationship to interprofessional work. Introducing the books’s goals and intended audience, the chapter defines key terms, such as interprofessional and the different forms of interprofessional working together, including teamworking, collaborating, coordinating, and networking. The chapter explains and compares three theoretical models of communication. The transmission model describes communication as information or message transmission. The transactional model considers communication as process of meaning-making wherein communicators and the meanings they co-construct are influenced by various contextual considerations. The constitutive model explains how communication and collaboration are intrinsically intertwined, insisting communication is the starting point for all social processes and structures, including interprofessional teams and healthcare organizations. The chapter provides an overview of the chapters.
