The Evaluation of Urban Air Pollution by Sulfur Dioxide SO2: The Case of the City of Casablanca–Morocco

Sulfur dioxide is a major atmospheric pollutant with impacts on human health and the environment. This study focuses on the seasonal variability of sulfur dioxide (SO2) concentration in the air of Casablanca in 2019. The research utilized data from the Casablanca Air Quality Monitoring Network to assess the monthly presence of SO2 in this city, known for its heavy traffic, high population density, and industrial activities. The results reveal a significant seasonal variation in SO2 concentration. The summer months, from June to October, show an increasing trend, with the highest concentration measured in August 2019 (34 µg/m3). During the winter months, SO2 concentration is lower, with the lowest concentration of SO2 (26 µg/m3) measured in February 2019. These seasonal variations can be attributed to various factors such as temperature, emissions from industrial sources, and traffic.
