Exploring Household Waste Management Practices and IoT Adoption in Barisal City Corporation

Effective waste management has become a critical issue in the rapidly urbanizing context of Barisal City Corporation (BCC) and similar urban areas of Bangladesh. Urban population growth has created serious problems for trash generation and disposal. In order to solve this critical issue, this study investigates residential waste management techniques and the deployment of Internet of Things (IoT) technologies inside BCC. Primary data from surveys revealed the most common household waste management practices, along with information on gender distribution, occupations, educational levels, and waste disposal habits among residents. The study also looked at the local government’s role in waste management, highlighting problems with waste collection and disposal as well as the entire waste management infrastructure. Utilizing secondary sources and comparison studies with prior literature, the study also examined IoT adoption in waste management within BCC. IoT-based solutions were examined, including mobile applications to improve communication between citizens and municipal authorities and smart garbage cans with sensors for real-time waste level monitoring. These technologies seek to improve efficiency, promote environmentally friendly waste management techniques, and optimize waste collection routes. The effects of household waste management practices on urban sustainability were discussed, highlighting the need for better waste disposal habits and strengthening local government activities. The study also looked at the advantages of IoT adoption in waste management, including resource optimization, cost savings, and environmental sustainability.
