Acute Rhinosinusitis

Rhinosinusitis is an inflammatory condition affecting the lining of the sinuses and nasal passages that can be variable in its clinical presentation. Anatomically, the nasal mucosa is continuous with the sinus mucosa, and both are concomitantly involved in any inflammatory condition, therefore the term “rhinosinusitis” is more accurately used instead of “sinusitis.” Recently rhinosinusitis has been classified into different phenotypes based on the etiology and the temporal pattern of inflammation. Proper understanding of those phenotypes is important as the prognosis and recommended treatment strategies can be different for each form of rhinosinusitis.
