Nasal Septal Perforation

Nasal septal perforations (NSPs) are essentially full-thickness defects in the nasal septum that arise from necrosis affecting various layers like mucoperichondrium, mucoperiosteum, cartilage, and/or bone. (Fig. 12.1) These perforations result in a communication between the two nasal cavities, disrupting the normal laminar airflow inside the nose. This disruption leads to turbulent air patterns which can cause damage to the septal respiratory epithelium and impair overall nasal function [1–3].
