Medical Misreadings

In the previous section we saw that a random sample of per-capita cancer rates by county can exhibit considerable variation depending on sample size. The smaller the sample the larger the variance and so rural counties with less dense populations tend to have both the largest and the smallest per-capita rates whereas larger counties have a more narrow spread around the nationwide average rate. This leads one to conjure narratives to explain what is going on.
