To gain more insight into the nature of randomness I’ll begin with an informal account of what is known as the Poisson distribution, named after the nineteenth century mathematician Simeon-Denis Poisson. In later chapters we treat Poisson processes more generally but our primary interest here is the role of the Poisson as an approximation to the Binomial distribution.
