Concluding Remarks: Returning to the Post-Secular

The concluding remarks will be made up of two sections. The first section consists of a broad sketch of the macro-narrative which has quietly simmered underneath the book’s textual surface, carefully extracting what these different sociological techniques and interventions can tell us about the history of social sciences. Here, I articulate a number of conclusions which can be drawn from the sociological usages of the belief-category and their relation to religious objects. In the second section, I briefly touch upon some of the current critiques levelled at classical sociology from a post-secular perspective and how this impacts the more generous readings I have provided here. I close out these concluding remarks with two claims on the current state of post-secularism, one critical and one normative. Complementing my critique of the current post-secular debate as one devoid of a sufficient grasp on the existential components of sociological modernity, is a call for greater transparency when it comes to evaluating the relations between the social-scientific and religious domains.
