Fertility Preservation Considerations for Transgender Women and Girls

Many transgender women and girls pursue medical or surgical therapies that threaten their fertility, including, but not limited to gender-affirming treatment. These patients may find recourse to fertility preservation and thus it is critical for clinicians to counsel these patients on their reproductive goals prior to initiation of any therapy that may threaten their fertility. This chapter describes the benefits and limitations of fertility preservation in transgender women, as well as key decision-making strategies to help clinicians counsel these patients effectively.
