Healthcare for Transgender Prisoners

Transgender people are significantly more likely to become entangled in the criminal justice system than cisgender people, due to numerous factors, including discrimination that limits their gainful employment. Unfortunately, prejudice against transgender people, as well as criminals, has resulted in indifference to the legitimate healthcare needs of transgender prisoners. Public opposition to necessary care, policies that limit safe placement, and endemic physical and sexual violence lead to negative outcomes such as erosion of mental health, auto-castration, and suicide.
