Memory law is a developing field. This chapter argues that the new approaches of the United Nations Special Rapporteur in the field of Cultural Rights (SRCR) are improving memory law through the use of codes other than law. Hence, in this context, it is a mechanism which complements that of the Special Rapporteur on the promotion of truth, justice, reparation and guarantees of non-recurrence. In what can be seen as an intersemiotic process, the SRCR advocates introducing cultural and artistic approaches to the process of promoting truth and reconciliation after serious national conflicts, in order to construct inclusive narratives which respect the truth and include voices that have been silenced in the creation of “official” memories. In this sense, it is only by using extra-legal frameworks of meanings that memory law can be really effective. In order to illustrate this argument, this chapter will apply the codes of applied drama/theatre to Ziad Doueiri’s film “The Insult,” presented in this chapter as a practical example in harmony with the approach of the SRCR. The conflict shown in the film could only be resolved by using what will be presented here as an applied drama/theatre approach to the case.
