In 1848, shortly before his premature and mysterious death, the American writer Edgar Allan Poe published Eureka. It was not a horror story or a detective novel—the themes that made Poe famous—but a “prose poem,” to use Poe’s own words, an essay describing his personal conception of the material and spiritual universe.
