Conclusion

Rousseau calls his own political thought a “sad and great System”; it acknowledges the potential for human greatness and the inevitable demise of political institutions. Recognizing the sadness of politics is not to abdicate responsibility for political action or to minimize the importance of obligations to one’s community. Instead, the response to sorrow is considered engagement.
