The NPC MC usually stems from the conventional IMC. In addition to the ability to synthesize multilevel output voltages and potentially higher conversion efficiency, some intrinsic merits of IMCs remain in NPC MCs. Nevertheless, several issues still need to be solved. As the key of NPC converters, the significance of neutral-point potential balancing is self-evident because the capacitance of the input capacitors in the NPC MCs is relatively small compared to the bulky DC-link capacitors in conventional NPC converters.
