Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and Machine Learning in STEM/STEAM Education

This chapter addresses new, cutting-edge technologies like artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning, with a focus on their educational benefits. These technologies are rooted in computer science, only one of many reasons education in computer science is quickly becoming a future imperative. In an effort to improve access to computer science (CS) for all students, New Jersey and other states have enacted a state law requiring public high schools to offer a course in CS beginning in the 2018–2019 school year. In response to new K-12 mandates in CS education, the Rutgers Center for Mathematics, Science, and Computer Education (CMSCE) partnered with Apple Computer, Inc. to provide teacher professional development (PD) courses in coding and app development using the Apple programming language, Swift. In the program, teacher participants developed CS and coding competencies to create apps addressing real-world challenges. Working closely with a sister organization at Rutgers, Game Research and Immersive Design (GRID), the CMSCE has also worked to provide teachers with professional development in advanced technologies such as machine learning and AI. This included offering courses in Machine Learning and Computer Vision that teach students and teachers how to build small, autonomous (e.g., self-operating) vehicles with the use of machine learning. In the course, participants build RC cars that “teach” themselves how to drive on their own. Technologies like these can create immersive learning experiences, especially when blended into maker and technology education activities. Learning environments integrating these contemporary technologies form a veritable playground for real-life education in which students take an active role in making the future.
