Management of Biological Invasions in Multifunctional Landscapes of Agroecological Ecosystems

Alien invasive plant, and insect species are introduced through different ways into Africa and are established throughout the continent providing new host for native and non-native insect pests and pathogens in natural and plantation forests. About 128 species of herbivores and pathogens have been reported in both native and non-native forests on the continent. Thus, threatening biodiversity and exerting more pressure on food security, local economy and calls for intensive management interventions. Available management strategies include mixed tree forests, adaptation of silviculture practices, sentinel plantings, biocontrol, semiochemicals, genetic breeding, geographical information services and large data. Legislation against invasive species is enforced with reference to the international plant protection convention by phytosanitary organisations at global, continental, and national levels following the international plant protection convention. There is an identifiable gap and the need to establish regional agencies that will oversee and consolidate management at the regional level. The challenges of biosecurity policies, their lack and capacity of implementation between member states as well as the inclusion of public awareness and indigenous knowledge for effective control are to be considered in the management of biological invasions.
