Speaking Difficulties that Young ESL Learners Encounter

This chapter provides an in-depth exploration of the speaking challenges faced by grade 10 ESL students in Abu Dhabi, UAE. It underscores the vital role of speaking skills in English language learning and examines the various factors that contribute to these difficulties. The research methodology includes qualitative methods such as classroom observations and interviews with both teachers and students. These methods help in identifying the key difficulties in speaking English and understanding their underlying causes. The chapter also reviews relevant literature and theoretical frameworks that offer insights into language acquisition challenges. The findings from this study are utilised to propose practical recommendations aimed at enhancing the speaking proficiency of ESL learners. This research is particularly valuable for UAE-based educators and policymakers in the field of language education, as it provides a comprehensive understanding of the barriers ESL students’ face in developing speaking skills and suggests effective strategies to overcome these challenges.
