Introduction: Teaching and Learning About the Past for Gender Justice in the Future

This chapter is an introduction to the collection and discusses how it is essential that history educators respond to the challenges created by the backlash against feminism and the recent attacks on women and gender diverse peoples. Educators have made great strides since the 1970s to make more women visible in history. The teaching of history in schools today, however, rarely extends beyond the firsts of cis-gender, White women, without fully questioning intersectional oppression. This collection gathers diverse scholars, activists, and education practitioners to assess the potential of intersectional feminist approaches to women and gender for history education. It constitutes the beginning of a long overdue conversation in how we teach and learn about the past and offers critical awareness of, and actionable paths for, gender justice in history education.
