The Use of RNAi Against Stink Bugs

The application of RNA interference (RNAi) has emerged as a promising approach for the targeted control of stink bugs, one of the most economically significant agricultural pests. This chapter explores the multifaceted landscape of stink bugs RNAi and delves into the potential benefits and challenges associated with using RNAi as a tool to control these challenging pests. Successful RNAi application in pest control relies on the presence and functionality of a molecular machinery comprising core RNAi machinery genes and auxiliary RISC factors, as well as the establishment of methods and strategies to deliver dsRNA specifically into the target insect’s cells. The chapter also thoroughly explores the importance of defining species-specific target genes and essential biological processes that are highly effective in causing mortality within the target insect population. Finally, the chapter covers the importance of producing substantial quantities of dsRNA molecules capable of eliciting an RNAi response specifically in the target insect’s cells, while minimizing any adverse effects on non-target organisms and mitigating the risk of eliciting resistance or refractoriness responses in the target species. The success of RNAi technology in pest management hinges on mastering these interconnected challenges and variables. This chapter offers a comprehensive overview of the potential of RNAi in managing stink bug populations while addressing the intricate challenges and considerations that must be navigated to realize its full potential as a viable pest control strategy. The insights provided here serve as a valuable resource for researchers, policymakers, and stakeholders seeking innovative solutions to stink bug control and safeguard agricultural productivity.
