摘要

Laboratory testing is key to the rapid and ongoing management of the critically ill patient. Point-of-care testing (POCT) refers to any such testing performed at or near the bedside by non-laboratory personnel. POCT offers more rapid results at the relative expense of accuracy and performance, but these shortcomings are decreasing with advancements in miniaturization technology. Improvements in wireless networking and smart device connectivity are pushing testing toward the bedside and even into the hands of patients. Quality assurance in this new paradigm relies heavily on strict maintenance of operator competency and participation in external quality or proficiency testing programs.
