Across many countries concentration of research funding is becoming more pronounced affecting both diversity and topic selection. What is driving these developments? And what are the arguments for and against increased concentration? We address these questions in this chapter and highlight how differing notions of research quality can be both a central driver of concentration and a possible remedy for potential negative effects.
