Confronting Inequalities in Education: The Symbiosis of Ubuntu and the Nordic Model

In the quest for a more robust understanding of the African philosophy of Ubuntu and its possible synergies with philosophies from other parts of the world, this chapter investigates the interconnectedness of the concept of Ubuntu and what has become known as the Nordic model. It also seeks to argue that at the very core of each of these philosophies is a common aspiration towards addressing imbalances and creating a fair, inclusive and empathetic educational environment. Ubuntu’s focus on qualities such as empathy, compassion, cooperation and the valuing of a sense of shared responsibility for the well-being of others shares similarities with the principles that underpin the Nordic model of education, such as equal access to education, the valuing of individual dignity and adjustment to meet individual needs. The chapter illustrates that when these philosophies are applied together, they offer, potentially, a transformative and symbiotic approach that confronts and challenges the normalization of educational inequality. Collectively, these philosophies also inspire educators to nurture the vision of an environment where learners with different needs and from different backgrounds can feel that they belong and that their dignity and well-being are upheld.
