Oldenburg and Gallois, 1666–1674. The Journal des Sçavans as a Source of Copy

  • David Banks

摘要

This chapter considers the period when Oldenburg was editor of the Philosophical Transactions and Gallois the Journal des Sçavans. The distribution of paragraphs and clauses is considered, showing that the translations usually have a smaller number of paragraphs and clauses than their source texts. The process type profile of translations and source texts are similar. Consideration of the semantic categories of themes shows that in the translations the object of study is enhanced at the expense of references to the author. Where modality is expressed, half of the cases are epistemic. Nominalized processes show a higher percentage of material and verbal processes than do finite verbs. There is again evidence of the differing natures of the readerships of the two journals.
