The First Translations (Oldenburg—de Sallo 1665)

  • David Banks

摘要

During the short period when Oldenburg was editing the Philosophical Transactions and de Sallo the Journal des Sçavans, which lasted only 13 weeks, two translations appeared. For each of the translations the relative distribution of paragraphs and clause is considered, showing that the translator tied up the text. This is followed by an analysis of process types, the semantic categories of themes and the use of modality. The nominalization of process is considered for both texts together since there are relatively few examples. There is evidence of adaptation of the translation to the specific readership of the Philosophical Transactions.
