Sloane and Cousin, 1696–1700. The End of an Era

  • David Banks

摘要

In this final period when Sloane was editor of the Philosophical Transactions and Cousin the Journal des Sçavans, and with 1700 as a cut-off point, four translations appeared in the English periodical. One of these is no more than a brief summary, and one was printed in two parts in the Journal des Sçavans but as a single item in the translation. The linguistic features analysed are more similar than in earlier periods. About half of the processes are material; roughly half of the themes refer to the object of study, and about half of the cases of modality are epistemic. Nominalization is rare. Although differences between the translations and their source text are less than in earlier period, where they exist, they can be attributed to the different readerships of the two journals.
