摘要

Mangroves of the Amazon are considered among the most preserved in the world, but regardless of their importance as relevant blue carbon ecosystems, they have not deserved much attention. This chapter presents the situation of mangroves of the Brazilian Coastal Amazon, discusses the main driven factors for its preservation and potential threats, and proposes some recommendations for sustaining mangroves preservation in the area. Among the drivers of preservation are discussed: low human population, legal protection, small-scale economic activities, and lack of large infrastructural complexes. Among the threats are discussed: urban development, road development, unsustainable practices, and oil discovery along the Amazonian coast.
