Perspectives on the Chinese Blue Carbon Credits Market for Safeguarding of Blue Carbon Ecosystems

This paper focuses on the development of the Chinese blue carbon credit market as a means to protect blue carbon ecosystems. With the rise in carbon emissions and the need to address climate change, carbon credits have emerged as a market-based mechanism to incentivize greenhouse gas reduction. China’s commitment to peak emissions by 2030 and achieve net-zero emissions by 2060 has brought attention to carbon markets, and China has significant potential for market-based carbon credits. BCEs (Blue Carbon Ecosystems) offer long-term solutions for mitigating and adaptation of global climate change, managing biodiversity challenges, and creating sustainable development opportunities. The paper discusses the policies and initiatives implemented by the Chinese government to promote the development of the carbon credit market for protecting BCEs. It also explores the challenges and opportunities associated with implementing blue carbon credit trade projects, such as issues related to measurement, reporting, and verification. The Zhanjiang Mangrove National Nature Reserve is used as an example in the paper. This reserve is recognized as a ‘Ramsar Wetland of International Importance’ and a ‘UNESCO Man and Biosphere Reserve’. The example highlights the development of carbon credit mechanisms in China and underscores the importance of integrating various perspectives to ensure the effective functioning of the blue carbon credit market and the long-term protection of blue carbon ecosystems in China.
