School Psychology in the Global Context: Transnational Advances to Support Children, Families, and School Communities

In the global context, with significant variation both between and within countries, school psychologists and educational psychologists provide a range of services: individual assessments of children who may display cognitive, emotional, social, or behavioral difficulties; developing and implementing primary and secondary intervention programs; consulting with teachers, parents, and other relevant professionals; engaging in program development and evaluation; conducting research; and preparing and supervising others. Around the world, common titles used to describe these professionals include psychologists, school psychologists, educational psychologists, psychologists in education, psychologists in schools, counselors, and psychopedagogues. Throughout this book, the terms school psychologist and educational psychologist will be used to refer to this specialty of psychology and those who engage in the professional services described above. This handbook (1) introduces a transnational approach to school psychology theory and practice; (2) provides multicultural, international, and global literature on school psychology; (3) synthesizes this literature in ways that help promote transnational perspectives in the field of school psychology; and (4) recommends transnational processes that can further enhance the preparation and role of school psychologists in a global context. The 28 chapters in this Handbook of School Psychology in Global Context are featured in 8 parts. These parts and contents include (1) foundations and conceptual framework, along with specific domains of global school psychology; (2) assessment and testing; (3) consultation; (4) prevention and intervention; (5) international research projects; (6) school psychological services and training around the globe; (7) special topics; and (8) school psychologists as child advocates. A brief summary of the content of each chapter is included.
