Closing Remarks and Introduction to Volume 2

In this first volume I have tried to compartmentalize what I regard as probably the most intricate part of the study of human anatomy from a complex relational standpoint. An appreciation of the fasciae, viscera, neurovascular arrangement, osteology and specialist soft-tissue spaces and sense organs allows one afterwards to integrate these areas. This integration is an essential element for understanding operative surgical approaches and in an appreciation of the anatomy of compartment infiltration in head and neck cancer. The approach I have adopted uses simple line drawings which the reader can trace or copy. Each of these images is designed to shore up or elucidate one or two discrete points of anatomy. More complicated images in anatomy textbooks require the reader to decipher the picture and frequently to find the answers to specific anatomy questions. Our approach here has been to limit the information provided by the image with the view that if you can draw it, you understand it. Further, if you understand the anatomy concerned you are more likely to remember it.
