Theorizing Nsibidi as Confraternized Communication

Nsibidi, a system of symbols indigenous to the south-south and southeastern regions of Nigeria, can be academically theorized as a communication theoretical framework by examining its role in conveying complex messages within a cultural context. This author believes that communication, be it symbols or speech, is “culturally motivated.” The symbols of Nsibidi, often pictorial in nature, serve as a visual language that communicates not only explicit information but also embedded cultural meanings. Nsibidi can be analyzed through semiotic theories, exploring how symbols acquire meaning and contribute to a shared cultural discourse. Additionally, considering Nsibidi within the framework of communication theories such as cultural studies or symbolic interactionism can provide insights into its role in shaping and preserving cultural identity through visual representation and interpretation as done in this article.
