This chapter introduces the concept of smart materials and categorises them according to environmental triggers: Water, Sun, Light. Several architectural examples demonstrate adaptive technologies through the use of self-responsive smart materials that activate adaptation mechanisms, promote a passive response to environmental fluctuations and ensure indoor comfort.
