A climate-adaptive building envelope varies its properties and performance when climatic conditions change. In most cases, smart materials are used for this purpose. This chapter introduces the concept of smart materials and categorises them according to environmental triggers: Water, Sun, Light. Several architectural examples demonstrate adaptive technologies through the use of self-responsive smart materials that activate adaptation mechanisms, promote a passive response to environmental fluctuations and ensure indoor comfort.
