A Systematic Review of Chatbots in Education: Benefits and Threats

The AI-empowered Chatbot uses texts or voices to provide information in a conversational manner, and the emergence of the chatbot has been increasingly enhanced the learning styles and experiences in educational settings. This paper conducts a brief review to introduce the technical characteristics of chatbots in education, exploring their characteristics, the evolution development of education when interacting with chatbots, and the potential challenges that may arise in education. It is noted that chatbots may benefit learners and educators on enhancing students’ awareness and interactivity, increasing the creativity and efficiency of learning activities, improving teaching quality and creativity, supporting the teaching feedback for educators. However, there are significant concerns on accuracy, fairness and ethics of chatbots that need to be addressed. Finally, the implications to reduce potential problems in school education are explored. Facing the inevitable wave of AI-technology, it is foreseeable that it will bring dramatic changes to education ecosystem.
