Structures, Systems, and Supports for Equitable, Open, and Online Learning in a Post-Pandemic World
摘要
The COVID-19 pandemic has reshaped higher education globally, revealing significant challenges and opportunities. This introductory chapter delves into the pandemic’s impact on equity, inclusion, and mental health within the educational sector. The rapid shift to online learning necessitated a reevaluation of pedagogical approaches, emphasizing student-centered learning, accessibility, and the importance of addressing diverse student needs. Vulnerable student populations, including those with disabilities, from minority ethnic backgrounds, or facing technological and financial constraints, experienced heightened challenges. The chapter highlights the exacerbation of existing inequalities, particularly digital disparities and systemic racism. Universities responded with early intervention and support programs to mitigate the psychological distress caused by social isolation. However, achieving quality and equitable online education required more than technological solutions; it demanded diverse pedagogical approaches and responsive policy measures. This volume, divided into three sections, examines institutional responses to the pandemic, equity and open education, and the future of higher education in a post-pandemic world. Through this exploration, the volume aims to document effective practices and policies to ensure the continued advancement of equitable and inclusive education in the evolving landscape of higher education.
