Revisiting Maritime Education and Training in the Era of MASS
摘要
The rapid evolution of the shipping industry, driven by industrial revolutions, has necessitated changes in the roles of seafarers and the adaptation of maritime education and training to evolving technologies such as autonomous surface ships. As traditional roles diminish with automation, new knowledge, skills in artificial intelligence, and machine learning become critical. The study emphasizes the integration of advanced digital educational platforms and practical training through Education Software as a Service (ESaaS) to increase the flexibility and effectiveness of seafarers’ education and training. It proposes a restructured curriculum that balances technical skills with critical thinking and attitudinal and leadership training, reflecting the needs of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. Maritime education and training providers need to align with international standards while innovating to prepare seafarers for a future where technology dominates, fostering a workforce that is adept at both technology management and problem-solving in a dynamic global shipping environment.
